(KPL) The two governments of Laos and Vietnam enhanced the existing health cooperation on medical treatment and health checkups.

Minister of Health Bounkong Syhavong and his delegation paid a working visit to Hanoi on June 26 and also met the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, Vu Duc Dam.

During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam suggested that Vietnam and Laos step up medical cooperation with more diverse and effective activities in the near future to match with the special solidarity between the two countries.

The Vietnamese Deputy PM noted with pleasure the outcomes of bilateral medical cooperation over the past years, particularly in medical education, training, check-ups and treatment.

The Vietnamese and Lao Ministries of Health should review collaboration achievements and put forth a specific plan for closer cooperation in the coming time, he said.

The Deputy PM also underscored the need for the two sides to instruct relevant units in building and operating the Vietnam-Laos Friendship Hospitals in Houaphan and Xieng Khouang provinces in 2016, which contain 200 beds and modern equipment.

He urged the two countries to promptly finalise a health cooperation agreement in a bid to facilitate medical quarantine at border gates, thus contributing to fully implementing the “one-stop” model.

Minister Syhavong briefed his host on issues discussed by leaders of the Health Ministries to boost and expand medical ties.

Accordingly, the two sides will focus their collaboration in medical check-ups, training, pharmaceutical production and food hygiene management, he said.

Annually, health centres in 11 Vietnamese provinces that border Laos receive thousands of Lao patients for treatment.  Eleven Vietnamese medical institutions and a number of leading Vietnamese hospitals have provided training courses for Lao doctors and medical staff.
