It is hoped that the construction of a railway connecting Laos and Vietnam would help the country move closer to its goal of becoming a major regional logistics center. Vientiane, the capital, and Vung Ang, a Vietnamese port city, will be linked by rail. With this port, Laos would be able to connect to the South China Sea and get access to major markets in neighboring countries like South Korea and Japan. The Laos-China high-speed railway, the first of its type in Southeast Asia, will officially open in 2021.
