Viettel Post Laos and Unitel Partner to Pave the Way for Logistics Investment in Laos

16th January 2026 post by MOIT Vietnam

The agreement between Viettel Post Laos and Unitel marks the initial step in Viettel's strategic expansion into logistics in Laos—a market considered to have the highest growth potential in the Mekong region. Under the agreement, Viettel Post Laos will handle middle-mile transportation, while Unitel will leverage its network of over 10,000 transaction points to deploy first-mile and last-mile delivery services. This model allows the two Viettel subsidiaries in Laos to interconnect infrastructure, test closed-loop operations, and standardize service quality before scaling up.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Luu Thai Son, Director of Viettel Post Laos, stated: “Our goal is to establish a national delivery network that meets international standards, ensuring over 90% of parcels are connected on time in the initial phase, aiming for 98-99% in the near future. This serves as the foundation for developing a modern logistics-delivery-ecommerce ecosystem in Laos.”

Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Chanthavixay Thanmavong, Deputy General Director of Star Telecom (Unitel), noted that collaborating with Viettel Post Laos enables Unitel to expand into logistics, complete its service supply chain, and effectively utilize the infrastructure built over the past decade.

Building on the success of Unitel—the market-leading telecommunications brand and a symbol of Vietnam-Laos cooperation—Viettel has identified this as the right time to expand its investment into logistics. The Lao market is currently valued at nearly $1 billion with an average annual growth of 10%, offering significant potential thanks to heavy investment in the Mekong-ASEAN-China economic corridors. Early entry allows Viettel to shape modern logistics infrastructure, gain a first-mover advantage, and align more closely with the Lao Government’s digital economy development strategy.

Expanding into logistics investment is also a continuation of Viettel’s “Go Global” strategy, aiming to diversify business sectors and increase value contribution in the countries where the Group operates. Leveraging its technological capacity and operational experience, Viettel can develop warehousing systems, distribution centers, multimodal transport, and end-to-end digital logistics management platforms. This will connect Lao goods to Vietnamese seaports such as Vung Ang, Da Nang, and Quang Ninh, facilitating regional and international trade.

Viettel's logistics investment orientation also holds strategic significance for economic security. Digitalized transport systems help manage the flow of goods, vehicles, and shipping data, supporting border trade security control. Simultaneously, logistics projects in Laos could create jobs for tens of thousands of local workers and develop high-quality human resources, contributing to social stability and sustainable growth in Laos.

In the next phase, Viettel Post Laos and Unitel will move toward a Business Cooperation Contract (BCC) model, sharing infrastructure, technology, and personnel to operate a comprehensive logistics-delivery-ecommerce ecosystem. Once this model is perfected, Laos’s domestic logistics infrastructure will be able to connect directly with regional networks—particularly the Hanoi-Vientiane-Bangkok economic corridor—creating a foundation for cross-border trade and regional economic integration.

With the philosophy of “business associated with social service,” Viettel is expanding its role from a telecommunications provider to a digital economy infrastructure developer, contributing to digital transformation and enhancing Laos’s national competitiveness. The partnership between Viettel Post Laos and Unitel demonstrates Viettel’s long-term commitment to creating logistics infrastructure, promoting trade, strengthening Vietnam-Laos cooperation, and realizing the vision of a connected, sustainable, and autonomous economy in the Indochinese region.
