From 8th to 10th September, the National Assembly of Vietnam organized the 41st ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary General Assembly (AIPA) online for the first time in history.

In the afternoon of September 4, at the National Assembly House, there was an informative press conference on the Five Presidents of AIPA 2020 and the 41st General Assembly, the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Council (AIPA 41).

In 2020, Vietnam will assume the role of a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations and President of ASEAN; at the same time, the National Assembly of Vietnam assumed the role of Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Council of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (AIPA for short).

Covid-19 epidemic becomes more and more complicated in the region and in the world, promote the results of online conferences within ASEAN and AIPA in recent years, the National Assembly of Vietnam held the congress, 41st AIPA Council with the theme "Parliamentary Diplomacy for a Cohesive and Proactive ASEAN Community" by online form from September 8-10, 2020 at the International Conference Center (ICC) 11, Le Hong Phong, Hanoi.

This is the third time the National Assembly of Vietnam has assumed the chairmanship of AIPA and the third time to host the AIPA General Assembly (the Vietnamese National Assembly held the presidency in 2002, the second in 2010). and this year's General Assembly is the first time in history that the AIPA General Assembly has been held online.

Chairman of the Foreign Affair Committee Nguyen Van Giau - Deputy Head of the Standing Committee of the 41st AIPA Organizing Committee said that this General Assembly, the Head of the Delegation of the Member Parliament's attendance reached the highest level ever, of which 10 countries assigned 11 Chairmen of the AIPA Parliament (Thailand has both the President of the National Assembly and the President of the Senate); 14 Vice Presidents. The number of international delegates registered to attend the meeting is 30 delegations more than 380 delegates including 230 members of the National Assembly.

In the context of the Covid-19 epidemic, the active transformation of the online meeting format by the National Assembly of Vietnam demonstrates the flexibility and a sense of responsibility and determination to successfully assume the role of Chairman of AIPA. Many initiatives of Vietnam will also be discussed at this Congress such as the establishment of the Conference of Young MPs, AIPA Female MP ...

Head of the AIPA Information and Propaganda Subcommittee 41 Nguyen Manh Tien added that along with the Government's activities, the National Assembly of Vietnam has carried out many online parliamentary diplomacy activities that demonstrates the responsibility of the Chairman of AIPA 2020.
