Vietnam and Laos diplomatic relations: more than six decades of cooperation.

Talking about the significance and importance of Laos and Vietnam establishing diplomatic relations 61 years ago, General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith emphasized that this is a historical event and a milestone. The importance of the relationship stems from the two countries' struggle on the political and diplomatic fronts, as well as their military balance.

Vietnam and Laos are two neighboring countries with mountains and rivers, and their brotherly relationship has been formed and forged over thousands of years of building and defending the country. President Ho Chi Minh, President Kaysone Phomvihane, and President Suphanouvong, in particular, laid the foundation for the two peoples' good traditional relationship and faithful bond over the last six decades, which has been recognized by generations. The successive leadership system of the two Parties, the two States, and the two peoples has been painstakingly cultivated, overcoming countless difficulties and challenges, to become a rare, exemplary, and faithful relationship.

After the signing of the Geneva Agreement on Laos in 1962, the revolutions in Vietnam and Laos entered a new phase of development. With this opportunity and favorable conditions, the two countries decided to officially establish diplomatic relations on September 5, 1962, confirming their destiny in the struggle for national liberation and independence of each country.

Talking about the significance and importance of Laos and Vietnam establishing diplomatic relations 61 years ago, General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith emphasized that this is a historical event and a milestone. Following the country's complete liberation, the two countries of Vietnam and Laos had more favorable conditions for promoting their special relationship, in the spirit of solidarity and fighting alliance, which is a sacred tradition in Vietnam. two peoples, as well as to ensure the long-term development of the Vietnam-Laos relationship. On July 18, 1977, the two Parties and two States agreed to sign the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation. This is an important turning point in Vietnam-Laos relations, providing not only a solid legal foundation for strengthening and expanding the relationship, but also a foundation for the two sides to sign a series of cooperation agreements. 

Overall, Vietnam-Laos relations have made significant progress in recent years; the content of cooperation is becoming more substantive, deeper, and effective, and it is constantly expanding comprehensively in all fields, bringing many practical benefits to the peoples of the two countries.

Political-diplomatic relations are becoming increasingly trusting; national defense and security are important pillars in Vietnam-Laos relations; Cooperation in economics, trade, and investment is being promoted; cooperation in education, training, culture, and tourism is being strengthened... Furthermore, cooperation between Laos and Vietnam is becoming more substantive and effective, particularly in the fields of infrastructure construction, medical care, and human resource development training…

Laos' Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Saleumxay Kommasith, stated that the country's special relationship with Vietnam is growing stronger and deeper. The Lao Party and Government affirm that they will continue to strengthen the two countries' great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation, which will constantly develop and bear fruit for the benefit of humanity, the people of the two countries, peace, stability, and development of ASEAN's common home, as well as in the international arena.

Following the success of the "Year of Solidarity and Friendship between Vietnam-Laos and Laos-Vietnam 2022" in the first months of 2023, the special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos continues to develop, profoundly and effectively. Senior leaders from both countries visit each other on a regular basis to express their determination to work together to preserve and nurture the two countries' relationship so that it can continue to develop and endure.

Speaking at the recent 78th Anniversary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam's National Day, Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Ba Hung stated that while Vietnam and Laos have many development opportunities, they also face many difficulties and challenges. However, under the leadership of the two Parties, Vietnam and Laos will continue to achieve many new and greater achievements in the cause of each country's construction and development.

Ambassador Nguyen Ba Hung believes that, no matter how complicated the world and regional situation becomes, or how difficult the two countries face, Vietnam and Laos will tighten their grip even more. We share the same suffering and support each other on the path to prosperity, independence, and self-sufficiency, and the Vietnam-Laos relationship will continue to bear fruit, benefiting the people of both countries and contributing to the region's and the world's peace, stability, and development.

The people of Vietnam and Laos are extremely proud of the special solidarity that has blossomed over the last 60 years, practically contributing to the cause of building and protecting the country. Each country's fatherland and development. It is an invaluable asset to both peoples, providing a solid foundation for future generations of Vietnamese and Laos to preserve, cultivate, and develop to new heights.
