Unitel - the symbol of Vietnam - Laos economic cooperation

On October 23 in Vientiane, Star Telecom (Unitel), a joint venture between the Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group and Lao Asia Telecom, held a ceremony on to mark 10 years since they started offering telecommunications services in Laos.

Attending the ceremony were Laos Deputy Prime Minister Sonesay Siphandone, Minister of Defense Chansamone Chanyalath, Minister of Posts and Telematics Thansamay Kommasith, Minister of Science and Technology Boviengkham Vongdara. On the Vietnamese side, Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Ba Hung, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Hung attended the event.

Speaking at the event, Unitel General Director Luu Manh Ha said after 10 years, Unitel has developed a region and global-level telecommunications infrastructure in Laos, with 3G, 4G and 4.5G mobile broadband networks offered across the nation through 8,000 base transceiver stations (BTS) and 30,000 kilometres of fibre-optic cable.

Regarding the long term goals,  Unitel's General Director pledged to modernise the firm with the most advanced technologies, and Unitel will pilot 5G technologyfollowed by artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and big data.

On this occasion, on behalf of the Vietnamese Government, Vietnamese Ambassador to Lao Nguyen Ba Hung also presented a third-class Labour Order to Unitel.
