The 8th Vietnam-Laos Political Consultation
On the afternoon of June 28, 2023, in the capital Vientiane, the 8th Vietnam-Laos Political Consultation meeting was held according to the agreement between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of two countries.
Within the framework of the meeting, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries gave an overview of the Vietnam-Laos relationship in recent times, and discussed outstanding issues in the region and in the international arena that the two countries having mutual interest. Faced with important steps forward in the two countries' relationship of solidarity, special friendship, and comprehensive cooperation, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of both sides expressed the deep joy. The official visit to Laos by President Vo Van Thuong (April 2023) and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh (January 2023) was organized successfully under close cooperation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the two countries.
In the coming time, the two sides agreed to continue to coordinate in well-organizing high-level visits and important cooperation mechanisms between the two countries. In addition, promote cooperation between ministries, departments and branches and effectively implement agreements reached by the two sides.
In the context of complex developments in the region and the world, with tensions constantly escalating, Deputy Minister Do Hung Viet and Deputy Minister Phoxay Khaykhamphithoune agreed that the two sides need to tighten cooperation, support and mutual assistance each other in issues that are decisive for peace and security of the region in regional and international forums, especially ASEAN and the United Nations.
When Laos becomes Chairman of ASEAN in 2024, Vietnam pledges to provide utmost support to help Laos successfully complete its term, contributing to maintaining the spirit of solidarity, mutual support and ASEAN's role in the region and international.
Regarding the East Sea issue, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the two countries agreed to maintain the common stance of ASEAN on issues in the East Sea, using conciliation and peaceful measures to handle disputes over sea and islands. All actions of both sides are based on respect for international law and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982); Actively deploy the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), strive to soon achieve the effectiveness and efficiency of the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
Regarding the direction of cooperation in the coming time, the Cooperation Agreement between the two Ministries for the period 2021 - 2025 needs to be implemented actively and effectively; The consultation mechanism at the ministerial and deputy ministerial levels must be maintained regularly and achieve good results. At the same time, the two sides promote information exchange, share experiences, and strengthen coordination between affiliated departments and branches, especially in activities such as: policy research, staff training, economic, border, consular diplomacy...
The 8th Political Consultation Meeting between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam and Laos was held successful and reached positive agreements. It is expected that the 9th Political Consultation meeting at the Deputy ministerial levels of Foreign Affairs Ministries will be held in Vietnam in 2024.
