Plans For A Unified Cross-Border Economic And Trade Zone Are Underway
The yearly border work talks for 2023 were held in Dong Ha City, Quang Tri Province, Vietnam, in the afternoon of January 13. Delegations from Savannakhet, Laos, and Quang Tri, Vietnam, respectively, met.
More than 108 kilometers separate the provinces of Quang Tri and Savannakhet along the border. This distance includes the two international border gates at Lao Bao and Den-sa-van, as well as three sets of auxiliary border gates at Ta Rung and La Co, Cheng and Ban May, and Thanh and Devilay.
During the meeting, the provincial representatives from Quang Tri and Savannakhet shared some details about their respective political, economic, and social situations in 2023, discussed the outcomes of putting the 2022 annual meeting minutes into action, and laid out a strategy for working together in 2024.
High-level delegations from Quang Tri and Savannakhet provinces signed a cooperation agreement covering the years 2023–2025 at the end of December 2022, according to Ha Sy Dong, the Permanent Vice Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee, during his speech. This lays a solid foundation for the two provinces of Quang Tri and Savannakhet to further strengthen their friendship, solidarity, and collaboration...
Meeting minutes containing cooperation elements were signed in 2024 by the two provinces of Quang Tri and Savannakhet based on the accomplishments obtained.
In accordance with this agreement, the two sides will work together to build and oversee the repair of embankments and landmark yards at national border markers 606 (1) and 607 (1). They will also fix and restore the damaged border marker 585 that washed away by floods. After the necessary approvals and funding, the competent authorities will fund and oversee the project. The two sides will also coordinate to conduct bilateral surveys to evaluate the current situation and propose plans to embankment to prevent landslides on the Vietnamese side of the Se Pon border river bank, specifically from marks 606 (1) to 607 (1). The results will be reported to the Chief of Staff of the two countries' border delegations.
The two sides have reached an agreement to organize a seminar called the "Lao Bao-Densavan Joint Cross-Border Economic and Trade Zone" at the Lao Bao International Border Gate (Quang Tri) at the end of February 2024. The seminar's objectives are to lay the groundwork for the cross-border commercial zone project and to draft a bilateral agreement that the governments of the two nations will sign. Once fully operational, the zone will contribute to socio-economic development, attract investment along the East-West economic corridor, and more.
