Opening ASEAN SOM Conference in Da Nang
In the morning of March 4, the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting (ASEAN SOM) took place in Da Nang city. Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung, Head of the Delegation of Senior Officials of Vietnam in ASEAN chaired the conference with the participation of senior officials from 10 ASEAN countries and the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN. This is the 2nd ASEAN SOM Conference in 2020.
Representatives of ASEAN countries exchanged views on the implementation results of the narrow conference of ASEAN Foreign Ministers held in Nha Trang City in January 2020 at the meeting. Preparations for the 36th ASEAN Summit and related conferences were scheduled to be held in Da Nang in early April.
The parties attended the meeting through the agenda of the ASEAN - New Zealand Commemoration Summit, which is expected to take place on April 9, right after the 36th ASEAN Summit. The countries also commented on steps implementing initiatives and priorities proposed by Vietnam in 2020 under the theme "ASEAN: Integration and proactive adaptation."
The participants expressed their support for initiatives such as: mid-term review of the implementation of the Community Building Plans to 2025, and the launch of exchanges on ASEAN after 2025; assessing the implementation of the ASEAN Charter, promoting sub-regional cooperation; especially the Mekong cooperation; Enhancing the role of women in community building, enhancing ASEN's image.
The general opinion is that these initiatives are seamless, feasible and will be an important contribution to ASEAN in enhancing cohesion and enhancing the resilience of the Community.
Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Quoc Dung affirmed Vietnam's determination to successfully fulfill ASEAN's 2020 presidency including accelerating the process of building an ASEAN Community and expanding foreign relations and improving the ASEAN way of working in his opening remarks.
Following the conference, from today to the end of March 6th, there will be many activities such as: ASEAN SOM Conference, 9th meeting of the Joint Working Group of the ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACCWG) and Joint Conference of Participants Joint ASEAN (JCM).
