VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - Pheuksa Garden, a famous tourist site, last week organised the annual Vientiane Boun Kinchieng (Hmong) Festival with colourful shows and activities.

The festival took place at the garden from November 22 to 24 to promote the culture and traditions of the Hmong people as well as tourism in the district and in Vientiane as a whole. The popular event attracted a lot of people.

The President of Pheuksa Garden, Mr Phouvong Phamisith, said this was a good year to stage the festival at the park because the atmosphere was more lively than in previous years as there were more visitors to the park. The purpose of the event was to display and conserve the lifestyle and customs of the Hmong people.

This is the third year the park has hosted the festival.  Pheuksa Garden is located in Danxy village, Naxaithong district, where there is a large community of Hmong people. About 60 percent of the employees at the park are Hmong.

The festival featured many activities such as a Hmong baci ceremony, Hmong cultural performances, a Miss Hmong and singing contests, and the traditional ball-throwing game between young men and women.

Mr Phouvong, who is a well-known gold trader in Laos operating under the trademark of Khamphouvong, said he built Pheuksa Garden in response to the tourism development plan of Vientiane authorities. He intends it to be the best tourist attraction in the area.

As well as serving tourists, it is also a place where students can go to learn about Lao culture. It also provides job opportunities for local people as well as preserving traditional medicinal plants.

A Naxaithong district official said the district teamed up with the organising committee of Pheuksa Garden to host and plan the event.

He praised the garden for making a significant contribution to economic development in the district, as well as the promotion and preservation of the culture and traditions of the Lao people.

Pheuksa Garden will not only host a Hmong festival, but also a Khmu festival and Lao New Year celebrations each year.
