High-Level Delegation from Laos State Inspection Authority Visits Viettel
During the meeting, Major General Do Minh Phuong, Deputy General Director of Viettel, provided an overview of the company's investment in Laos. He stated that Viettel entered the Lao market in February 2008 through a joint venture, in which Viettel holds a 49% stake and its partner, Lao Asia Telecom (LAT), which is owned by the Lao government, holds 51%. In October 2009, the mobile network under the Unitel brand was officially launched.
In the telecommunications sector, Viettel has established 9,441 base stations, including approximately 4,788 4G stations, and laid over 37,500 kilometers of fiber optic cable. Unitel is proud to have the largest network infrastructure in Laos, covering 100% of the country's districts. The 4G service reaches 70% of the villages, making Laos one of the countries with the best 4G coverage and speed in Southeast Asia, and providing high-speed internet access to the entire population.
In the field of digital transformation, Major General Do Minh Phuong highlighted that Viettel is at the forefront of this initiative for the Lao government and its citizens. As a result of its contributions, Unitel has received numerous accolades and awards from the Lao government. In 2014, it was awarded a Certificate of Merit; in 2016, it was ranked among the top 30 most valuable telecommunications brands in the ASEAN region and was recognized as the leading brand in Laos by Brand Finance. In 2018, Unitel received the Second-Class Labour Order from the Prime Minister of Laos. In 2019, it was awarded the First-Class Issara Order and the First-Class Development Order by the President of Laos, as well as the Third-Class Labour Order by the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Regarding business performance, Unitel achieved a revenue of 129.8 million USD and a profit of 36.7 million USD in 2023. In the first five months of 2024, the company generated a revenue of 57.9 million USD, surpassing the annual plan by 46.5%, and achieved a pre-tax profit of 17.3 million USD, exceeding the annual plan by 46.8%. By 2025, Unitel aims to become the leading technology group in Laos, with telecommunications as its core service. Fintech, digital content, e-commerce, healthcare, education, services, transportation, and agriculture are expected to be the main growth drivers in the future.
During the meeting, representatives from Viettel expressed their hope that the members of the Lao State Inspection Delegation would continue to support Unitel's activities in their respective roles. Expressing gratitude for the warm reception from Viettel, Mr. Kham Phan Phom Ma That, Chief Inspector of the Lao State, highlighted that over the past 30 years, Viettel Group has consistently strived for innovation and growth, building the Group into a stronger entity. He expressed hope that Viettel would continue to develop and grow even further in the future. On behalf of the high-level delegation from the Lao State Inspectorate, Mr. Kham Phan Phom Ma That thanked Major General Do Minh Phuong, Deputy General Director of Viettel Group, for sharing insights into the formation and development of the Group as well as the state of investment cooperation in Laos.
