Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation Program: Developing a Strategy for Innovative Development Towards 2030
The Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) is a region interconnected by the Mekong River, spanning an area of 2.6 million square kilometers and home to approximately 340 million people. GMS cooperation is considered one of the most effective mechanisms for collaboration within the Mekong subregion. The long-term goal is to promote and facilitate mutually beneficial economic cooperation among the countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and the Yunnan and Guangxi provinces of China, rapidly transforming the Greater Mekong Subregion into a dynamic and prosperous region in Southeast Asia.
The GMS is actively developing the GMS Innovation Strategy for Development Towards 2030 (the Strategy). The draft concept of the Strategy was approved at the 26th GMS Ministerial Conference in December 2023. This draft concept is now being transformed into an action-oriented document with the assistance of a group of international experts.
This Strategy will be the first document to be approved by GMS leaders at the 8th GMS Leaders’ Summit this year. According to the request of GMS ministers, it is crucial that all relevant ministries and sectors in GMS countries actively participate in the consultation process to develop the Strategy. This ensures that the Strategy accurately reflects the perspectives and priorities of the GMS countries. For this reason, the Strategy development task force will conduct a mission in Hanoi on March 20, 21, and 22, 2024, to consult with various stakeholders in Vietnam. The GMS Secretariat will organize a consolidated consultation meeting with Vietnam’s ministries and sectors, including the National Agency for Science and Technology Information (NASATI), on the morning of March 20, 2024, at the ADB Resident Mission in Hanoi to gather contributions for developing the Strategy and ensure its alignment with Vietnam's needs and realities.
