Fostering border trade cooperation between Vietnam and Laos

After the three-year implementation of the Vietnam - Laos Border Trade Agreement signed between the two Governments has achieved positive and important results in many aspects.

On July 26, The Ministry of Industry and Trade in coordination with the Quang Tri provincial People's Committee held a conference to review the three-year implementation of the Vietnam - Laos Border Trade Agreement signed between the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the Government of the People's Democratic Republic Laos.

According to data from the Ministry of Planning and Investment, there are 292 projects in Laos invested by Vietnamese enterprises, with a total investment capital of 5.1 billion USD.

According to the General Department of Customs, the growth rate of Vietnam-Laos bilateral trade in the period of 2015-2018 is about 13% per year.

At the conference, delegates also proposed that relevant ministries, branches and localities should prioritise investment in infrastructure, border gates and border markets in accordance with the plan on developing the Vietnam -Laos border market network to 2020; adopting mechanisms and policies to attract and encourage enterprises to invest in building border markets and developing infrastructure to facilitate border trade.

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Quoc Khanh said that in order to improve the effectiveness of the Agreement, MOIT will amend the Agreement to be suitable for the situations; implementation will focus on addressing some specific issues such as registration of traders, investment capital ... in order to create a strict legal framework for the implementation of the Agreement.
