Enhancing Cooperation Between Vietnam and Laos

2nd May 2024 post by MOIT Vietnam

Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed that Vietnam will continue to support and assist Laos in successfully fulfilling its role as ASEAN Chair in 2024. He proposed that Laos collaborate in promoting OECD-ASEAN relations and the Southeast Asia Regional Programme (SEARP).

Agreeing with Minister Bui Thanh Son's proposals, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith suggested that Vietnam actively participate and contribute to the upcoming ASEAN Foreign Ministerial' Meeting (AMM) in Laos. Both sides agreed to enhance coordination and support each other at international, regional, and sub-regional forums, and with fellow member states, to maintain unity, overcome challenges, and strengthen ASEAN's central role.

The two ministers expressed their satisfaction with the significant achievements in the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos. They agreed to implement the outcomes of the meeting between the two Prime Ministers during Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone's visit to attend the ASEAN Future Forum in Hanoi (April 22-23, 2024).

Both sides highly valued the trusted and effective cooperation and close coordination between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs, demonstrated by the increased exchange of delegations, high-level contacts, and key bilateral cooperation mechanisms. They agreed to effectively implement the existing cooperation mechanisms, particularly trilateral cooperation, including the Laos-Cambodia-Vietnam Development Triangle, Laos-Vietnam-Australia cooperation, and Laos-Vietnam-Thailand collaboration.
