Vietnam strengthens cooperation with countries in the Mekong sub-region

In 2020, Vietnam attaches importance to cooperation mechanisms in the Mekong sub-region through the 9th Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS 9), the 10th Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam Cooperation Summit (CLMV 10), the 11th Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Summit on Development Triangle Area (CLV 11) held online.

At ACMECS 9 with the participation of senior leaders of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and ASEAN Secretary-General, with the theme "Partnership for connectivity and recovery", the leaders affirmed determination to promote cooperation in environmental protection, smart agriculture development, sustainable management of Mekong water resources and climate change.

Besides, the strengthening of prevention and response to the Covid-19 pandemic is also of special interest to ACMECS leaders. The bloc countries have promoted economic reconstruction, including restoring supply chains, boosting trade, investment, industry, and tourism.

In addition, the early putting of the ACMECS Development Fund into operation to effectively implement priority projects is being promoted; The cooperation mechanism between ACMECS and ASEAN and related sub-regional cooperation mechanisms were also highly assessed by the leaders.

At the 10th CLMV conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and the heads of government of Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar approved 03 documents including the Conference's Joint Statement, "The CLMV Development Framework" and a list of 16 priority projects of cooperation. In particular, the "CLMV Development Framework" is an oriented document to build the CLMV region into an international business center and aim to become high-middle-income economies within the year 2030. Leaders of the four countries also agreed to strengthen connectivity in many aspects for the sustainable and inclusive development of the CLMV region in terms of infrastructure, institutions, economy, and people.

At the 11th CLV Conference, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, and Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen affirmed their determination to build a peaceful, stable, and prosperous CLV development triangle area by continuing to expand and improve the effectiveness of cooperation, accelerate the integration process, restructure the economy, improve the business environment, and work closely with other ASEAN member countries to realizing the ASEAN Community Vision 2025. The three Prime Ministers approved the Joint Statement on Cooperation in the CLV Development Triangle Area.

At these conferences, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc affirmed the importance of cooperation and coordination among the 5 Mekong neighbors in their efforts to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, gradually recover the economy and promote a strategic role connecting the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean in 2021 and the following years.
