15th November 2021 post by MOIT Vietnam

In Laos, the Vientiane Times on the evening of November 4 reported that the Lao government was discussing the proposed route of the highway running from the capital Vientiane through the provinces of Xaysomboun, Xieng Khuang and Huaphan and connecting to the Vietnamese border.

According to the above newspaper, an online conference organized by the Ministry of Planning and Investment of Laos has identified key locations of the highway corridor running from the capital Vientiane to the Nam Soy border gate, bordering with Na Meo which is the border gate of Vietnam.

The conference assigned the Road Administration, the Lao Ministry of Public Works and Transport to coordinate with the provincial Departments of Public Works and Transport to discuss and survey the locations that the highway will pass in each district, taking into account local needs.

Officials were also asked to review proposed connection points between provinces and then submit reports to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, which is the agency responsible for approving the key locations of the above corridor. This will be the initial draft route for the contractor to use, conduct a detailed study and select the next section of the corridor after signing the Memorandum of Understanding.

According to the Vientiane Times, last month, the Lao Ministry of Public Works and Transport sent technical staff from the Road Department to coordinate with the Public Works and Transport departments of Vientiane capital and related provinces to work together. This group then held an online meeting and agreed on the connection points of the aforementioned highway.

As planned, the above highway will start at the intersection of National Highway 13 South at Km21, Xaythany district, Vientiane capital. In Xaysomboun Province, the road will pass through Longxan District, connect with Anouvong District and then pass through Longcheng District. In Xieng Khuang province, the proposed connection point would be Xieng Neua village in Phaxay district, connecting with Na Hoi village in Paek district, Khai Yot Ngum village in Paek district and then Muang Kham village, connecting to Namnat village. in Kham district.

In Huaphan province, the road will run through Nasala village in Huameuang district, then through Xamneua district and Viengxay district. From Huayheung village in Viengxay district will run to the Vietnamese border.

The meeting agreed to ask the Lao Ministry of Public Works and Transport to approve the above connection points and proceed to draw the connecting lines of this initial route after the COVID-19 prevention measures are lifted.
