Laos expresses support for the development of the Laos-Vietnam Railway Project

8th August 2022 post by MOIT Vietnam

As part of the Laos-Vietnam Railway Project, the Laotian government has granted the "go-ahead" for a feasibility study to be conducted on a planned railway line that would link Vientiane, the capital city, with Thakhek, the provincial capital, in the heart of Khammouane province. Vientiane and Thakhek would be linked by rail thanks to the planned line. Planning for a rail line that would run between Vi and another city is the subject of this research.

The proposed rail link between Laos and Vietnam is included in the Laos-Vietnam Railway Project. A planned rail line would link Vientiane with the nearby town of Thakhek. The proposed rail link between Vientiane and Thakhek is the focus of the forthcoming research. The projected railway would make a stop at Thakhek as one of its many destinations. Both Thakhek and Vientiane, Laos's capital, would be accessible along this corridor (LVRP).

Recently, the government of Laos and the Lao Petroleum Trading Lao Public Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the Lao High-Speed Electrified Railway Project (LVRP) (PetroTrade). The length of the LVRP is estimated to be 452 kilometers, and the total investment required to complete it is approximately 5 billion US Dollars under the terms of the MOU.

The total length of the railroad that will be built throughout the course of its several stages is roughly about 139 kilometers. It'll first be out in the sleepy Cambodian village of Thakhek and finish in the bustling Vietnamese seaport of Vung Ang. You may visit both of these places in Vietnam. Possible nearby nations are Cambodia and Vietnam. These two nations share the Southeast Asian region with one another. The second phase of this project has officially begun, and it will include building a road that connects the towns of Thakhek and Vientiane. Soon, work will begin on this route. It's estimated that once all is said and done, you'll have traveled 312 kilometers.

Ever since its first proposal in 2015, the Laos-Vietnam Railway Project (LVRP) has been hotly contested. If this strategy works, the two countries will be able to combine their supply networks and become more logistically integrated. Both nations might benefit from this.

The Laos-Vietnam Railway, the Vung Ang seaport, the Thanaleng inland port, and the Vientiane logistics area will all be linked as part of this phase of the Laos Logistics Link (LLL) project. As an added bonus, a connection will be established between the Thanaleng inland port and the Thanaleng seaport. Additionally, if completed, the Laos-Vietnam Railway will reach all the way to Thanaleng. Furthermore, a connection will be established between the coastal port of Vung Ang and the interior port of Thanaleng. It's conceivable that all of these places are really found inside Laos's official borders.

PetroTrade has signaled that it is planning to complete the task with the help of independent local and international consulting businesses and in collaboration with the relevant government entities. In addition to working with the relevant government agencies, this would be a major benefit. It is anticipated that the work will be completed and all necessary permissions will be obtained within the next twenty-four months from the current date.
