Vietnam-Laos: A Unique and Unbreakable Bilateral Relationship
During his recent official visit to Laos, Vietnamese President To Lam rode a VinFast electric automobile, a gift from Vietnam. Mr. Sisoulith, Laos' General Secretary and President, was among the passengers in the car. This episode, which happened on the first day of President To Lam's first trip overseas, highlighted the "great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation" that is typical of the relationship between Vietnam and Laos.
During their official meetings, both presidents highlighted the need for strengthening ties in the face of global and regional instability. They agreed that more consultation, experience sharing, and collaboration were required to overcome challenges and build economies that are resilient, self-sufficient, and have more global connection. The leaders of both countries emphasized their strong commitment to prioritizing and cultivating the relationship between Vietnam and Laos, with the goal of increasing economic cooperation to match the two countries' close political connections.
Both parties have committed to sharing expertise and skills in macroeconomic management, anti-corruption activities, and the improvement of cross-border infrastructure, such as international border crossings and road linkages. The two countries' partnership will be enhanced in a range of areas, including but not limited to education, tourism, energy, clean agriculture, research and technology, healthcare, culture, and local community exchanges.
Thongloun Sisoulith, the President of Laos, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Vietnam for its genuine friendship and help. He characterized the bond between the two nations as "unique and unparalleled." He vowed to work closely with President To Lam to strengthen this exceptional relationship and ensure its continued success and efficiency.
Vietnam will also aid Laos in properly adopting substantial international tasks in the year 2024. These responsibilities include the chairmanship of the ASEAN and AIPA organizations. As a consequence of their talks, the two leaders attended the signing of four cooperation agreements between various ministries and sectors, as well as further business ties.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1962, Vietnam and Laos have grown closer together as a result of conflict and the present time of progress. Vietnam remains one of Laos' most notable investors, having invested around $5.5 billion in a number of businesses. This investment resulted in significant contributions to Laos' national budget. During conversations between President To Lam and Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, the two leaders agreed to look for new ways to unlock resources and strengthen economic cooperation. The goal is to achieve 10-15% trade growth by 2024.
The Nong Khang Airport, the Friendship Hospital in Xieng Khouang, and the Police Political Academy of Laos are only a few of the significant joint projects that have been completed successfully, and both presidents have expressed thanks for their accomplishments. They also committed to make considerable progress on other vital efforts in energy, mining, and infrastructure. Both countries want to create an environment that encourages financial investment and collaboration.
Sonexay Siphandone, the Prime Minister of Laos, emphasized the country's determination to work with Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to ensure the full implementation of the two countries' high-level agreements, particularly in the economic sector. Viengsavanh Vilayphone, Vice President of the Lao-Vietnam Cooperation Committee, believes that Vietnam's assistance in economic and other areas is very valuable to the Lao government and people. Laos continues to encourage Vietnamese businesses, particularly private organizations with expertise in finance, technology, and competitiveness. Vietnam's assistance, notably in the fields of education and economic development, has been widely appreciated.
During a discussion on ways to strengthen economic cooperation, Nguyen Ba Hung, the Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos, recommended increasing transportation connectivity between the East and West and exploring new forms of cooperation. For example, the Vietnam-Laos +1 model has the potential to help both countries capitalize on their own strengths while also benefiting from additional money, expertise, and technology via collaborations with other firms. Furthermore, both countries stand to profit from free trade agreements in order to improve trade efficiency, expand market presence, and attract more investment.
Vietnam gifted Laos twenty VinFast electric cars as a mark of support for its role as ASEAN Chair in 2024. President To Lam drove one of these automobiles to demonstrate the two nations' close relationship. This act reflected the long-standing relationship between the two countries.
