Vietnam and Laos Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthening and Nurturing Bilateral Relations
On September 11, 2024, General Secretary and President of Vietnam, Tô Lâm, and General Secretary and President of Laos, Thongloun Sisoulith, co-chaired a high-level meeting in Hanoi to further strengthen the special solidarity between the two countries. This meeting, an important mechanism for bilateral cooperation, aimed to deepen the already strong relationship between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, as well as between their respective governments and peoples.
During the meeting, both leaders reviewed the internal developments of their respective countries, focusing on key achievements in Party building and socio-economic progress. They exchanged views on regional and international matters of mutual concern, emphasizing the importance of their collaboration in addressing emerging challenges. They evaluated the recent successes in bilateral cooperation, noting that these efforts have contributed significantly to the stability and growth of both nations. Additionally, they discussed the future trajectory of Vietnam-Laos relations, agreeing on strategic directions to enhance cooperation across a wide range of sectors.
Both General Secretary Tô Lâm and General Secretary Thongloun Sisoulith congratulated each other on the progress made in implementing the resolutions of their Party Congresses. They recognized the vital support that Vietnam and Laos have provided each other over the decades, not only during the struggle for national liberation but also in the current era of development. The two leaders reaffirmed the historical bond between their countries, describing the Vietnam-Laos relationship as a "priceless shared asset" that serves as a powerful source of strength for both nations. They expressed a shared commitment to preserving this relationship and passing it on to future generations as a lasting legacy of solidarity and cooperation.
General Secretary Tô Lâm stressed that Vietnam continues to regard its relationship with Laos as a cornerstone of its foreign policy. He affirmed that maintaining and nurturing this bond is a top priority, reflecting Vietnam's consistent approach to fostering close ties with Laos. In turn, General Secretary Thongloun Sisoulith reiterated that regardless of changing circumstances, Laos will remain firmly committed to working with Vietnam to strengthen their special solidarity. Both leaders emphasized that this relationship is not only important for their countries but also contributes to peace, stability, and development in the broader region and the world.
The two leaders expressed their satisfaction with the comprehensive growth in Vietnam-Laos relations, which have produced practical outcomes across multiple sectors. They highlighted the significant progress made in economic development, defense, security, and political stability, all of which have contributed to the well-being of both nations. Furthermore, they welcomed the deepening trilateral cooperation between Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration among the three countries to enhance regional stability and growth.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính of Vietnam and Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone of Laos discussed the achievements in economic, trade, investment, cultural, educational, and scientific cooperation between the two countries. They acknowledged the progress made in these areas but noted that more needs to be done to address existing challenges and capitalize on the full potential of the bilateral relationship. Both prime ministers emphasized the need for breakthrough initiatives in economic and trade cooperation to ensure these areas align with the strong political ties between Vietnam and Laos. They proposed several concrete measures to overcome obstacles and enhance connectivity between the economies of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, aiming for more integrated regional development.
The leaders agreed that political cooperation should continue to guide the overall relationship between Vietnam and Laos, serving as the foundation for deeper engagement in other sectors. They stressed the importance of close coordination on strategic issues, particularly as both countries prepare for their upcoming Party Congresses. Additionally, they highlighted the need to strengthen cooperation in defense and security, which remains a key pillar of the Vietnam-Laos partnership.
The two sides also agreed to increase the exchange of information and consultation on issues of mutual concern. They committed to working together closely in international and regional forums, ensuring that their positions are aligned and mutually supportive. Both countries will continue to implement joint declarations and agreements between their Parties and States, focusing on enhancing collaboration between ministries, sectors, and localities. This effort is aimed at removing any remaining barriers to cooperation, improving the quality and effectiveness of investment projects, and expanding cooperation between Party organizations, State agencies, mass organizations, and the peoples of both countries. Such efforts will contribute to socio-economic development and help maintain security and stability, particularly in the border regions shared by Vietnam and Laos.
To further enhance their partnership, both nations pledged to maximize the effectiveness of existing cooperation mechanisms while exploring new, innovative approaches to strengthen their special solidarity. These initiatives will benefit the peoples of Vietnam and Laos and contribute to regional peace, stability, and development. The leaders emphasized that fostering this unique relationship is not only a matter of bilateral importance but also a contribution to broader global efforts toward peace and cooperation.
