10th December 2019 post by MOIT Vietnam

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN) - Vientiane and Pakxe are set to improve waste management and treatment services, including collection, waste-to-resource opportunities, and wastewater treatment.

Authorities officially launched the ‘Wastewater and Solid Waste Treatment Capacity Building Project for City Environment Improvement in Laos’ project in Vientiane on Monday.

The project will be carried out from 2019-2024 in the two major cities of Vientiane and Pakxe, Champassak province.

The Korean government is supplying funding of more than US$6.7 million for the project through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).

Ministry of Public Works and Transport officials and representatives of KOICA and GGGI met yesterday to kick-off the project. Director General of Water Supply Department of Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Mr Phomma Veoravanh co-chaired the launch.

The meeting highlighted the overall objective of the project in enhancing capacity to manage green city development and improve access to waste management and treatment services, including collection, waste-to-resource opportunities, and wastewater treatment.

It comprises a vision for green cities and action plan for Vientiane and Pakxe, implementation strategy for solid waste management, deployment of a waste-to-resource initiative and facilities in Vientiane and Pakxe, and improvement of the national urban sanitation strategy.

The project is in line with the government’s long-term goals, which integrate the National Green Growth Strategy into the Public Works and Transport Department’s Strategy for 2016-2025 and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport’s 5-year Development Plan for 2016-2020. These aim to ensure sustainable and green infrastructure development.

Since 2017, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the GGGI have been discussing the development of green cities. The two partners agreed to focus on wastewater and solid waste management, which are seen as key areas requiring urgent action.

The project will work towards the common goal of making the most of the green growth potential offered by Vientiane and Pakxe.
