Promoting cooperation in the development of Vietnam-Laos border trade

In two days (September 26 and 27, 2018), in Quang Binh province, Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade and Laos’ Ministry of Industry and Trade held the 11th Conference on cooperation in development Vietnam-Laos Border Trade.

The conference was attended by Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Quoc Khanh and Laos’ Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Bounmy Manivong and Mr. Nguyen Xuan Quang - Vice Chairman of Quang Binh People's Committee.

Deputy Minister Tran Quoc Khanh, at his opening speech, highlighted the trade relationship between Vietnam and Laos, which has a 56-year tradition. The two countries share a 2.337km border, passing through 10 provinces and cities of both Vietnam and Laos which are potential for development, with strategic locations on the East-West Economic Corridor.

Speaking at the onference, Deputy Minister Bounmy Manivong once again emphasized the Vietnam - Laos friendship relationship. According to Mr. Bounmy Manivong, the two countries need to promote the implementation of signed commitments and trade agreements, develop transport and trade infrastructures, etc.

At the Conference, the two sides agreed that, besides the achieved results, the border trade between the two countries has developed but has not been stable and sustainable, not commensurating with the potential of each side.

Deputy Minister Tran Quoc Khanh affirmed that the Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade will always support businesses and localities to promote the development of border trade between Vietnam and Laos. Business shortcomings and obstacles will be answered and resolved promptly. Deputy Minister Tran Quoc Khanh also noted that if there are problems and difficulties, localities and businesses should inform immediately the Import and Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) for guidance and support.
