Lao Media Honors Vietnam on 79th National Day

3rd September 2024 post by MOIT Vietnam

On September 2, 2024, Pasaxon and Pathet Lao, two of Laos’ leading newspapers, paid tribute to Vietnam's 79th National Day with front-page coverage. The articles commemorated the founding of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on September 2, 1945, marking the anniversary of the historic moment when President Ho Chi Minh proclaimed Vietnam’s independence in Hanoi, establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

The front pages of major Lao newspapers on September 2 prominently featured news and articles congratulating Vietnam on its 79th National Day.

The feature article in Pasaxon, titled “79 Years of Development of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” provided an in-depth look at Vietnam’s transformative journey since independence. It praised the Communist Party of Vietnam for its leadership in guiding the nation through decades of challenges, including the struggles for national liberation, reunification, and defense. These efforts paved the way for a series of reforms that have driven Vietnam’s impressive socio-economic growth and modernization.

The article underscored Vietnam's consistent economic progress, characterized by high growth rates, industrialization, and improved living standards. It highlighted Vietnam's successful integration into the global economy, with diplomatic relations established with 193 countries and economic and trade connections with 230 nations and territories. Vietnam’s ability to negotiate over 500 bilateral and multilateral trade agreements reflects its status as a reliable partner and active contributor to the international community. Furthermore, the article acknowledged Vietnam's role in regional economic initiatives, emphasizing its commitment to fostering cooperative economic ties within ASEAN and beyond.

A significant focus of the article was the deep-rooted Vietnam-Laos relationship, described as a symbol of enduring international solidarity. The article outlined how, over the years, this relationship has been strengthened through mutual support and shared sacrifices, particularly during struggles for national independence and ongoing development efforts. Despite geopolitical challenges and attempts to weaken this bond, the Vietnam-Laos partnership remains resilient, evolving into a comprehensive cooperative framework that encompasses political, economic, and cultural collaboration.

To illustrate the uniqueness of this relationship, the article quoted Kaysone Phomvihane, the former General Secretary and President of Laos, who described the Vietnam-Laos alliance as unprecedented: “In the global revolutionary movement, there have been many instances of solidarity, but none as enduring and comprehensive as that of Vietnam and Laos. Vietnamese generations have stood by the Lao people in their quest for freedom and progress, with many Vietnamese comrades embracing Laos as their second homeland." This quote served as a testament to the shared sacrifices and unwavering commitment that have defined Vietnam-Laos relations over time.

Pathet Lao and Pasaxon also reported on the National Day celebrations held at the Vietnamese Embassy in Laos, which featured a large gathering of Vietnamese expatriates, Lao officials, and representatives from various sectors. The event was marked by speeches emphasizing the historical and contemporary significance of Vietnam-Laos ties. The celebrations underscored how the friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between the two nations have not only continued to flourish but have become more strategic and effective over the past year.

Both newspapers expressed optimism about the future trajectory of Vietnam-Laos relations. They conveyed confidence that, by leveraging their shared history and mutual aspirations, the two countries will be able to effectively navigate challenges and seize opportunities for growth. This collaboration, they noted, has broader implications for regional peace and stability, as the strong bilateral ties between Vietnam and Laos contribute significantly to ASEAN’s goals of connectivity and prosperity.

Moreover, Pasaxon and Pathet Lao emphasized that the deepening of Vietnam-Laos relations reflects broader regional dynamics, where strong bilateral ties can act as catalysts for wider cooperation. As both nations pursue their respective development goals, their partnership is seen as a crucial element in promoting sustainable growth, economic integration, and cultural exchange across Southeast Asia.
