Impressive Growth in Vietnam-Laos Trade Turnover in 2022
Oil and gasoline of all types, fertilizers, iron and steel, machinery, equipment, and replacement parts, etc., make up the bulk of Vietnam's US$656.4 million (a 10.4 percent increase) in exports to Laos.
In 2022, the value of commerce between Vietnam and Laos is expected to reach USD 1.703 billion, an increase of 24% from the full year of 2021.

Laos received $656,4 million (a 10.4% increase) in goods from Vietnam. Petroleum of all kinds accounted for USD 125.4 million, up 439%; fertilizers of all kinds accounted for USD 32.5 million, up 31.2%; iron and steel of all types accounted for USD 60.1 million, down 15%; other machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts accounted for USD 59.2 million, up 1.4%; iron and steel products accounted for USD 44.3 million, down 41%; means of transport and spare parts accounted for USD 36.6 million, down 20.7%.
There was a 34.6% increase in imports, totalling $1.047 billion. The primary imported goods increased in value from the previous year in every category: wood and wood products (+29.4%), fertilizers of all types (+50%), rubber (+30%), and maize (+5,259%), each reaching USD 140 million.
According to the Vietnam Trade Office in Laos, in 2022, the industry and trade sectors of the two countries have regularly coordinated and organized trade promotion activities, connecting trade between Vietnam and Laos such as the Business Forum of the two countries chaired by the Minister in April 2022; Conference connecting business trade between Vietnam and Laos in the field of agricultural products, food and consumer goods in May 2022 with the direct and online participation of 170 enterprises of the two countries; Vietnam-Laos trade fair held in Vientiane, Laos in August 2022 with the scale of 250 standard booths with the participation of 128 enterprises of the two countries; Vietnam-Laos bilateral trade promotion forum in November 2022; Successfully organized the 12th Vietnam-Laos border trade cooperation conference; The conference on cooperation in development of Vietnam-Laos industry, trade, energy and mining industry, chaired by the Minister level, will be held in December 2022 in Ha Long city, Quang Ninh province.
More specifically in December 2022, commerce between Vietnam and Laos reached 211 million USD, an increase of 60% from November 2021. The value of exports from Vietnam to Laos hit 101 million USD in December 2022, up 129% from the previous month.
The value of petroleum products supplied to Laos in December jumped to US$60.1 million, an increase of 721.7 per cent from November 2022. This is the end result of bilateral trade cooperation to ensure a steady supply of petroleum in both countries. Other major exports include machinery, equipment, tools, and spare parts, which totaled USD 4.4 million (an increase of 60.6%), iron and steel of all types, which totaled USD 3.6 million (22.1%), paper and paper products, which totaled USD 1.4 million (50%), etc.
In December 2022, Vietnam imported goods from Laos to the tune of USD 110.2 million, up 24.4% from November 2022. Increasing import prices have been seen for several key items, including rubber ($27 million, up 25.9%), fertilizers of all types ($7.4 million, up 57%), and fresh produce ($360 thousand, up 189%).
