Identifying new priorities and actions in ASEAN political-security cooperation

The meeting focused on discussion and comments on the draft midterm review report on the ASEAN Political-Security Community (APSC) 2025 master plan.
Making the speech at the meeting, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Head of SOM ASEAN-Vietnam Nguyen Quoc Dung emphasized the importance of mid-term review of the APSC Blueprint 2025. Note encouraging progress in implementing the 5-year Plan, with 96% out of 290 action plans that have been put into practice, the Deputy Minister also pointed out the shortcomings and challenges encountered including quality assurance issues, implementation effectiveness and difficulties in coordination among ministries and agencies as well as limited propaganda, promotion and increase awareness for the people.
Facing the new changes in the regional and world situation, the Head of the ASEAN-Vietnam SOM suggested that the Conference should take this opportunity to discuss and identify new priority areas and lines of action to add to the Master Plan to ensure that ASEAN political-security cooperation continues to be relevant and effectively adaptable to emerging challenges. At the meeting, participants shared about the difficulties and obstacles faced by their sectors in the process of implementing the APSC Master Plan and exchanged solutions including strengthening interagency coordination, inter-pillars and ways to mobilize resources. In the coming time, the delegates committed to continue their efforts to complete the proposed measures, at the same time agree to consider and identify new priorities and measures to propose to the Plan.
On the basis of the comments of the Agencies at the Conference, Vietnam with the role as the President of ASEAN will coordinate with the ASEAN Secretariat to complete the content of the Mid-Term Review Report of the APSC Blueprint 2025 for submission. The Political-Security Community Council checked before reporting to the 37 ASEAN Summit in November 2020.
