Growing Tourism Ties Between Vietnam And Laos
Vietnam has secured the second place in terms of the number of tourists visiting Laos, according to the Lao Tourism Development Department. The number of Vietnamese tourists visiting Laos has shown a steady growth rate of 10.8%, contributing to their high ranking among international visitors.
In the first six months of 2023, Laos welcomed a total of 1,674,436 foreign tourists. Thai tourists topped the list with 668,595 arrivals, followed by Vietnamese tourists with 398,937 visits. Other countries that contributed significantly to Laos' tourism sector include China, South Korea, and the United States.
Comparing the figures to the previous year, the number of Vietnamese tourists visiting Laos increased by 10.8%. Conversely, there was a notable increase of 42.7% in the number of Laotian tourists visiting Vietnam. The capital city of Vientiane, Vangvieng, and the ancient capital of Luangprabang were among the popular destinations for Vietnamese tourists in Laos.
The Lao Tourism Development Department has projected that in 2023, Laos could attract around 2 million or even exceed 2 million international tourists. Additionally, Laos has set an ambitious goal to attract over 4 million visitors and generate a revenue of approximately USD 712 million in 2024.
However, achieving these targets requires further investment in infrastructure development, improving the quality of tourism services, and implementing effective digital marketing strategies to promote tourism in Laos.
