Renewable energy in Vietnam is increasingly valued
A newly published study shows that Vietnam is becoming a model for solar and wind power development for ASEAN countries.
The results of a study led by the Australian National University showed that Vietnam is at the forefront of ASEAN in developing solar and wind power.
Accordingly, from 2019, Vietnam has surpassed Thailand to become the leading country in ASEAN in terms of installed capacity for solar and wind power. Based on data from the International Renewable Energy Agency, , Vietnam's total solar photovoltaic capacity will reach about 16,500 MW, far exceeding the 850 MW and even is approaching the target set for 2030 of 18,600 MW.
In 2019 alone, Vietnam installed more than 100,000 rooftop solar systems. Statistics also showed that Vietnam's solar and wind power output had increased from 4.7 TWh in 2019 to 9.5 TWh in 2020, this being an increase of nearly 200%. With this increase, Vietnam is highly respected by many countries in the Asia-Pacific region as well as many countries in the world.
In ASEAN, other countries such as Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia and the Philippines also have great potential for solar and wind power At present, Vietnam has far surpassed these countries in the successful exploitation of solar and wind power.
Dr. Do Nam Thang, one of the members of the research team, said that from the case of Vietnam, 6 lessons can be drawn to help ASEAN countries make the most of their natural advantages to develop solar power and develop solar power. wind electricity.
Firstly, it is necessary to have the commitment of leaders and strong support of the community, thereby introducing many policies to encourage businesses to promote the development of wind and solar power.
Secondly, the high purchase price of electricity from renewable energy producers (FITs) will be the driving force for businesses to invest in new energy.
Thirdly, Vietnam is the only ASEAN country that exempts land rental tax for renewable energy enterprises, and this has created an incentive for businesses to invest and participate in renewable energy projects.
Fifth, Vietnam has a quite favorable investment environment for renewable energy projects.
Finally, compared to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam is the country with the lowest subsidy for fossil fuels.
The study also shows that, if developing countries have appropriate policies and financial mechanisms, they can rapidly develop forms of renewable energy. Early and thorough preparation will also help limit some difficulties such as overloading of the grid.
The study was carried out by international experts from the Australian National University, the ASEAN Energy Center, the Norwegian Diplomatic Institute, and the Hanoi National Economics University.
