Opening a new horizon of cooperation between Vietnam and Australia in order to develop the agricultural and fishery market
In the morning of October 27, 2020, the Trade Working Group under the framework of the Conference of the Ministers of Economic Partnership Vietnam - Australia held an online meeting at the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The Vietnamese delegation is headed by the Director of the Asia - Africa Market Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade) with the participation of relevant agencies of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and representatives from ministries and agencies such as the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Education and Training, and Ministry of Transport.
The Australian side is headed by the first assistant, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade as the Head of the delegation, in addition there are the Deputy Ambassador and members of the Economic Division of the Australian Embassy in Vietnam. At the meeting, the two sides reviewed the implementation of the contents of the 2019 Working Group meeting, discussed bilateral and multilateral trade issues and regional and international forums. At the same time, discussing solutions to remove difficulties for bilateral trade, discussing the progress of building "Strategy for strengthening Vietnam - Australia economic cooperation" in the context of the world economy, the region is under severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Vietnam's statistics show that in 2019, import and export turnover between Vietnam and Australia reached more than 7.9 billion USD, up 3% compared to 2018. In the first nine months of 2020, despite the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic, Vietnam - Australia trade still reached more than 6.1 billion USD, up 2.3% over the same period in 2019. To balance the trade between the two countries are more balanced and sustainable. At the meeting, Vietnam asked the Australian side to facilitate Vietnamese goods to be exported to Australia such as opening markets for Vietnamese agricultural and aquatic products such as fresh shrimp and passion fruit; strengthen cooperation in trade defense, competition management, industry and energy, electricity regulation, e-commerce, trade and investment promotion; provide technical assistance for the implementation of the Free Trade Agreements to which the two countries are a member.
Vietnam also requested the Australian side to coordinate and support in propaganda to Australian associations, businesses and localities on activities to increase business trade between the two countries in the context of the Covid-19 epidemic of the Vietnam Trade Office. Nam proposed as "The Online Fair of Vietnamese goods sources", the free application Vie-Aus Trade. At the same time, the two sides are requested to soon complete the signing of the Protocol to amend the Air Agreement between the two Governments since 1995, creating favorable conditions for airlines of the two countries to operate direct flights between the two sides. Regarding multilateral issues, the two sides exchanged openly about the situation of cooperation in regional and world frameworks such as the Agreements of Establishing the ASEAN - Australia - New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA), CPTPP agreement, RCEP agreement, APEC agreement and WTO agreement. In which, both Vietnam and Australia are seriously implementing commitments in the CPTPP agreement with member countries; jointly take active measures to address common issues such as certification of origin in the CPTPP; determined to strive to sign RCEP early in 2020 and share views on reform in the WTO ... At the end of the meeting, the two sides agreed to continue to work closely to implement the tasks of the Working Group in construction. and implementing the Vietnam-Australia Economic Cooperation Enhancement Strategy and continuing to report the contents of trade cooperation that the two sides have agreed on at a technical level to the Meeting of Ministers of Economic Partners South - Australia is expected by the end of 2020 or early 2021.
In the first 5 months of 2020, Australia imported fresh and dried guava and mango fruit mainly from Vietnam, reaching 100.3 tons, valued at 295 thousand USD, up 130.5% in volume and 99.3 in % volume of value. The proportion of imports from Vietnam accounts for 31.4% of the total imports of fresh and dried guava, mangoes into Australia. According to the Import and Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), statistics from the International Trade Center (ITC) show that imports of fresh, dried guava and mangoof Australia in the first 5 months by 2020, 318.9 tons, which is worth $ 1.2 million, down 10.6% in volume and 6.1% in value over the same period in 2019. Average import price of fresh guava and mango and dried products of Australia reached 3,793.7 USD / ton, up 5.1% over the same period in 2019.
