New direction for ASEAN economic development after the Covid-19 pandemic

27th September 2021 post by MOIT Vietnam

The ASEAN Energy Ministers issued a Joint Statement affirming the will of the member countries in jointly pursuing the goals of energy security and mobility.

The complicated development of the COVID-19 epidemic poses unprecedented challenges, especially in the energy sector.

However, this can also be seen as a driving force for the ASEAN community to become more cohesive in coordinating measures, policies as well as innovations to recover the economy and facilitate sustainable energy transition in the region.

To overcome the huge challenge from the COVID-19 epidemic, ASEAN countries need to strengthen their cooperation to achieve the goals of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation, ensuring energy security, energy access, energy efficiency, and sustainable development not only for a single country but for the whole region.

This information was given by the Minister of Industry and Trade at the 39th ASEAN Energy Ministers Meeting (AMEM 39) and related conferences with the theme " We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper" held on 13-16 September 2021.

Speaking at the opening session of the Conference, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien announced the transfer of the role of President of AMEM 2021 to Mr. Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md Hussein, Minister of Energy of Brunei.

Along with that, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien expressed thanks and highly appreciated the support of ASEAN for the leading role of Vietnam in AMEM 2020.

On this occasion, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien congratulated and expressed his belief that Brunei will succeed in the chairmanship of AMEM 2021.

During the event, ASEAN Energy Ministers issued the Bandar Seri Begawan Joint Statement on Energy Security and Energy Transition to affirm the will to jointly pursue the goals of regional energy security and transition.

The Joint Declaration articulates the huge financial, investment, and technical as well as cross-sectoral and cross-pillar support needed to deploy advanced, cleaner, and low carbon energy in the region. It also calls for concrete actions to develop robust policies and measures and to strengthen national, bilateral, and multilateral energy programs and projects that enhance energy resilience and improve energy security to form the foundation of an inclusive and energy transition.

On the sidelines of AMEM 39, the ASEAN Energy Business Forum 2021 (AEBF 2021) was held to provide updated information on energy development orientations, share research results, policy recommendations, and attract investment in energy projects in ASEAN.
