ASEAN implements a number of initiatives on regional integration
Stakeholders’ Forum on the Implementation of the Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI) Work Plan IV (2021-2025) was held online on June 8.The forum aims to implement the IAI Work Plan IV (2021-2025), which was approved by ASEAN leaders at the 37th ASEAN Summit in November 2020 in Vietnam.
Attending the forum were about 100 delegates, including the IAI Task Force, ASEAN's partner countries, and representatives of relevant ministries and sectors of the 10 ASEAN countries, especially the four countries receiving and implementing projects within the framework of IAI including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam (CLMV).
Speaking at the opening of the forum as Chairman of the IAI Task Force in 2021, Ambassador Nguyen Hai Bang emphasized the role of the IAI initiative in narrowing the development gap between ASEAN countries as well as in efforts to build the ASEAN community, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The IAI Work Plan IV (2021-2025) has an important contribution to the ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework (ACRF) while supporting ASEAN, especially the CLMV countries in the socio-economic transition to strengthen resilience from the pandemic.
Ambassador Nguyen Hai Bang thanked the contributions and coordination of ASEAN's partner countries in the process of implementing projects within the framework of IAI, especially Australia's AADCPII program, which sponsored the implementation of IAI Work plan IV (2021-2025). The partner countries commit to continue to contribute to the IAI framework in the coming time.
At the forum, the delegates made suggestions and comments for more effective implementation of IAI projects in the context of the complicated developments of the pandemic in the region.
The Initiative for ASEAN Integration (IAI), launched in 2000, was designed to provide a framework for regional cooperation through which the more developed ASEAN Member States (AMS) could assist newer members to meet their ASEAN targets and commitments. Through special assistance to Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Viet Nam (CLMV countries), the IAI aims to narrow the development gap within ASEAN and enhance its competitiveness as a region.
